Do financial markets exacerbate inequality?

On the occasion of the launch of his new book « Wall Street à l'assaut de la démocratie : Comment les marchés financiers accroissent les inégalités » in Canada, Georges Ugeux, professor at Columbia University Law School, CEO of Galileo Global Advisors and ex Executive Vice President, International & Research of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) spoke with Professor Thierry Warin of the Department of International Affairs at HEC Montréal, CIRANO Fellow and President of the International Trade and Finance Association.

Georges Ugeux

Georges Ugeux is the Chairman & CEO of Galileo Global Advisors LLC, a firm he founded in 2003 to offer CEOs, Boards of Directors and governments independent advice on international business development, restructuring, compliance, and mergers and acquisitions. Galileo’s main focus has been advisory services in Europe and Asia, with a particular expertise in emerging markets like India and China. More recently, a series of assignments led Galileo to deepen its knowledge of climate change initiatives, including ESG investments.

Prior to Galileo, Mr. Ugeux was the Group Executive Vice President, International & Research, at the New York Stock Exchange. He built and managed the Exchange’s International Group and, during his tenure, spearheaded the listing of 308 companies from 43 countries, out of the 470 non-US companies listed on the NYSE with an aggregate value of $2.7 trillion. During that same period, the NYSE’s international trading moved from 40 to 140 million shares per day.

Mr. Ugeux is a Lecturer in Law at Columbia University School of Law, where he teaches the seminar “International Banking and Finance: the Challenges” and leads a reading group on Brexit. He is a frequent visiting professor at La Sorbonne University Paris I and has guest lectured at the Catholic University of Louvain, from which he holds a Doctorate in Law and is Licentiate in Economics, and the College of Europe in Bruges. He served as a Special Advisor to the Program on International Financial Systems at Harvard Law School and currently sits on the Board of Polyfinances, the financial vertical of Montreal-based Polytechnique Technical University. Mr. Ugeux is also a member of the Advisory Committee of the Emerging Markets Institute of Cornell University’s Samuel Curtis Johnson School of Management.

Thierry Warin

A CIRANO Researcher and Fellow since 2001, Main Researcher of the theme World Economy, Researcher in charge of Mondo.international, Thierry Warin is Full Professor in the Department of International Business at HEC Montréal. He has a Professorship in Data Science for International Business. He is President of the International Trade and Finance Association, Member of the board of editors of International Journal of Economics and Business Research, Fellow of the Salzburg Global Seminar, Researcher at CERIUM-CEUE (Université de Montréal) and President and co-founder of the NGO Ed' Haïti.

Holding a Ph.D. in Monetary Economics and Finance from ESSEC Business School, his research is mainly on international economics and finance topics, with a particular focus on the European economic integration, while using Data Science as his main methodological approach.

Thierry Warin was Full Professor at SKEMA Business School Raleigh (Founder and Director of the SKEMA Global Lab in AI), Associate Professor at Polytechnique Montréal (Director of the International Projects Program), Associate Professor at Middlebury College (Director of the International Studies and IPE program) and Academic Director at SIE-Sun Yat Sen University in Guangzhou.

An alumnus of the Salzburg Global Seminar, a former Visiting Scholar at the Minda De Gunzburg Center for European Studies (Harvard University, 2005) and the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs (Harvard University, 2015-2017), he has authored numerous academic publications and books or special issues.
