The 56th Annual Conference of the Canadian Economics Association was held in a new mixed online and in-person format from May 31 to June 4, 2022.


The annual conference is the Canadian Economics Association's flagship event. Each year, in late May or early June, a variety of academic papers, state-of-the-art lectures and special sessions are presented. The conference is hosted by a Canadian university and participants come together (online or in person) to present their cutting-edge research, make connections, and participate in engaging lectures. 

A special CIRANO-JDI-Phelps-RIIB session was held on Friday, June 3 with 3 presentations including one by Laura Lasio, Assistant Professor at McGill University and Principal Investigator of the Competition theme at CIRANO, Robert Clark (Queen's University) and Christopher Fabiilli (Competition Bureau).

Several CIRANO researchers presented their most recent research work (Marcel Boyer, Marie Connolly, Benoit Dostie, Raquel Fonseca, John Galbraith, Jorgen Hansen, Étienne Lalé, Fabian Lange, Marie-Louise Leroux, Ming Li, Florian Mayneris, Dalibor Stevanovic, Nicolas Vincent, Huan Xie, ...).

 

Marcel Boyer

Marcel Boyer (M. Sc. and Ph.D. economics, Carnegie-Mellon University; M.A. economics, Université de Montréal) is presently Emeritus Professor of Economics at the Université de Montréal; Associate Member of the Toulouse School of Economics (TSE, member of TSE Sustainable Finance Center) and the Institute for Advanced Study in Toulouse (IAST); Distinguished Associate Fellow, Montreal Economic Institute; Fellow of CIRANO and of the C.D. Howe Institute (Toronto); Academic Affiliate of Analysis Group (Montréal, Boston); Member of the Governance Committee of the “Sustainable Finance and Responsible Investment” AFG Chair at École Polytechnique de Paris and Université de Toulouse; and Member of the C.D. Howe Institute Competition Policy Council.

He taught economics at York University (1971-1973), UQÀM (1973-1974) and Université de Montréal (1974-2008), where he held the Jarislowsky-SSHRC-NSERC Chair in Technology and International Competition of École Polytechnique (1993-2000) and the Bell Canada Chair in Industrial Economics (2003-2008).

Marcel Boyer is Knight of Ordre National du Québec (2021), Officer of the Order of Canada (2015), Laureate of the Léon-Gérin Prize for career excellence in Humanities and Social Sciences (Prix du Québec, 2015), Honorary Fellow of the French Association of Environmental and Resources Economists (FAERE, 2014), Honorary Fellow of the Canadian Economics Association (2013). Following his public lecture at Collège de France in 2005, the latter honored him with the Médaille Guillaume-Budé. Laureate of the Marcel-Vincent Prize (ACFAS, 2002), Fellow of the World Academy of Productivity Science (2001), Fellow of The International Journal of Industrial Organization,(1997), Laureate of the Distinguished Guest Professor Award (Wuhan University of Technology, 1995). He is elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (Academies of Arts, Humanities and Sciences of Canada, 1992) and Laureate of the Marcel-Dagenais Prize (Société canadienne de science économique, 1985), of the Endowment-for–the–future Distinguished Scholar Award (University of Alberta, 1988), and of the Alexander-Henderson Award (Carnegie-Mellon University, 1971).

He was founding Director of the Observatoire de la Francophonie Économique, President of the international Society for Economic Research on Copyright Issues (SERCI); Member of the Expert Panel of the Council of Canadian Academies on the State of Industrial Research and Development; Member of the jury of the Donner Prize for the best book on public policy by a Canadian, Member of the SHS1 committee of the French National Research Agency; Vice-President and Chief Economist of the Montreal Economic Institute; President of the Canadian Economics Association; President of the Société Canadienne de Science Économique; CEO of CIRANO; Member of the Board of Directors of the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER, USA); Member of the National Statistics Council of Canada; Member of the Management Committee of Bell-University Labs; Member of the Board of the Montreal Mathematical Finance Institute; Member of the Board of Directors of the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada; Chairman of the Board of the Network for Computing and Mathematical Modelling; Visiting Senior Research Advisor for industrial economics at Industry Canada; Member of Industry Canada advisory committee on business strategies and innovation; Member of the Executive Committee of the Canadian Law and Economics Association; Member of the Board of the Agency for Public-Private Partnerships of Québec; Member of the Editorial Board of the Canadian Journal of Economics and  the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization; and Chairman of the Board of the Caisse Populaire de St-Jérôme.

His article « The determination of optimal fines in cartel cases: Theory and practice” (with Marie-Laure Allain and Jean-Pierre Ponssard), Concurrences – Competition Law Review 2011, was chosen as Best Academic Economics Article - 2012 Antitrust Writing Awards (Institute of Competition Law and George Washington University Law School). His recent article “Alleviating Coordination Problems and Regulatory Constraints through Financial Risk Management” (with Martin Boyer and René Garcia), Quarterly Journal of Finance 3(2) has received the Outstanding Paper Award 2015 of the Midwest Finance Association. His book Réinventer le Québec: Douze Chantiers à Entreprendre (with Nathalie Elgrably; Stanké 2014, 176 pages) was among the four finalists for the 2014-15 Donner Foundation Prize for the best book on public policy written by a Canadian.

Author or coauthor of over 330 scientific articles and papers and public and private reports, Professor Boyer currently conducts research in the areas of investment valuation (risk, flexibility, and real options); efficient organizations and public policies (water markets; competition-based social-democracy); inequalities; value and cost sharing; and law and economics (cartels, anti-competitive practices, environmental liability and other issues, intellectual property rights). Marcel Boyer has acted as expert economist on behalf of several national and international public and private corporations and organisations, and has testified as expert witness before various organizations and tribunals: arbitration tribunals, Copyright Board of Canada, Québec Energy Board, Superior court of Québec (in both civil and criminal cases), Court of Queen’s Bench of Saskatchewan, Superior Court of Ontario, Supreme Court of British Columbia.

Marie Connolly

A CIRANO Researcher and Fellow since 2009, Marie Connolly is Full Professor in the Department of Economics at the École des sciences de la gestion of the Université du Québec à Montréal (ESG UQAM) and Vice Dean of Research at ESG UQAM. She is also founder and director of the Research Group on Human Capital.

Holding a Ph.D. in Economics from Princeton University, her research is primarily empirical and touches upon various topics in labor economics, such as social mobility, the formation of human capital, the gender wage gap, subjective well-being, women’s labor force participation and the evaluation of public policy. She is also interested in the economics of popular music, including the resale of concert tickets and the environmental practices of rock bands.

Her work as been published in the Journal of Labor Economics, the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization and the Canadian Journal of Economics, among others.

Benoit Dostie

A CIRANO Researcher and Fellow since 2001, responsible of the CIRANO Pole on the Socio-economic Impacts of Digital Intelligence and Main Researcher of the theme Innovation and Digital Transformation, Benoit Dostie is Full Professor in the Department of Applied Economics at HEC Montréal and Academic Director of the Centre interuniversitaire québécois de statistiques sociales (CIQSS).

He also holds the Power Corporation of Canada Chair in Labour Relations, Compensation and Benefits.

Holding a Ph.D. in Economics from Cornell University, his research interests are labour economics and applied econometrics.

Raquel Fonseca

A CIRANO Researcher and Fellow since 2012, Raquel Fonseca is Professor in the Department of Economics at the École des sciences de la gestion of the Université du Québec à Montréal. She is also co-holder of the Research Chair in Intergenerational Economics (CREEi), researcher and laboratory director at Centre de recherche de l’Institut universitaire de gériatrie de Montréal (CRIUGM), researcher at Centre de recherche sur les risques, les enjeux économiques, et les politiques publiques (CRREP) and Affilated Adjunct Economist at RAND Corporation.

Holding a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Louvain, her research interests are health economics, pension systems, retirement and aging, poverty, entrepreneurship and labor markets.

John W. Galbraith

A CIRANO Researcher and Fellow since 1998, President of CIRANO Scientific Committee, John W. Galbraith is Full Professor in the Department of Economics at McGill University.

Holding a Ph.D. in Econometrics from Oxford University, his fields of interest include time series econometrics, and empirical macroeconomics and finance. His recent work concerns maximum horizons forforecasts with statistical models in the fields of macroeconomics and financialvolatility, and estimating long-memory models and GARCH models.

John W. Galbraith was Head of the Department of Economics at McGill University from 2010 to 2016. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Economics Association (1997-2001, 2003-2006) and President in 2004-2005. He was co-editor of the Canadian Journal of Economics, 2000-2004.

Jörgen Hansen

A CIRANO Researcher and Fellow since 2001, Jörgen Hansen is Full Professor in the Department of Economics at Concordia University. He is also Fellow of the Institute of Labor Economics (IZA) and member of the Centre interuniversitaire de recherche en économie quantitative (CIREQ).

Holding a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Gothenburg, his fields of specialization are labour economics and applied econometrics. His research areas focus more specifically on the use of human capital, the impact of taxation on labour supply, the returns to education and the use of welfare.

His work has been published in journals such as Econometrica, Journal of Econometrics, Journal of Applied Econometrics, Journal of Human Resources, Journal of Population Economics, Oxford Bulletin of Economics and Statistics and Empirical Economics.

Étienne Lalé

A CIRANO Researcher and Fellow since 2017, Étienne Lalé is Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at York University in Toronto.

Holding a Ph.D. in Economics from Sciences Po Paris, his research focuses on macroeconomics and labour economics, with a special interest in understanding cyclical and secular fluctuations in labor markets. His current work analyses the equilibrium and welfare effects of employment protection; the determinants of worker reallocation across occupations; the cyclical behaviour of hours and employment; long-run changes in labor market dynamics.

Fabian Lange

A CIRANO Researcher and Fellow since 2011, Main Researcher of the theme Skills, Fabian Lange is Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at McGill University. He is also Program Director Industrial Relations Major, Director of the Montreal Partnership for Human Resource Management and Holder of the Canada Research Chair in Labor and Personnel Economics.

Holding a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Chicago, he pursues interests in population, health and labour economics.

After receiving his Ph.D. in 2004, he joined the Department of Economics at Yale University as an Assistant Professor. In 2010, he was promoted to Associate Professor at Yale. He joined the economics department at McGill University in 2012. Fabian held visiting positions at the University of Chicago, Oberlin College, and the University of Michigan.

In population economics, he studied the link between schooling and fertility decisions. He has published work on the trade-offs between increased fertility and education (the quantity-quality model) using data sources from the historical American South. In health economics, he studies the determinants of the socio-economic gradient in health. He asks what role information processing, cognitive ability, and education play in generating socio-economic gradients in health? Further, he develops and estimates models of health dynamics and uses these to study the socio-economic gradient in health. In labour economics, his research interests concern how workers careers are shaped by processes of information revelation. In particular, he studies the role of employer learning in generating earnings inequality as individuals age. He also studies stigma due to prolonged unemployment and its implications for optimal unemployment insurance schemes.

He received the H.G. Lewis Prize 2006-2007, the IZA Young Labor Economist Award 2008 and the John Rae Prize of the Canadian Economic Association 2016.

Laura Lasio

A CIRANO Researcher and Fellow since 2016, Main Researcher of the theme Competition, Laura Lasio is Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at McGill University.

Holding a Ph.D. in Economics from Toulouse School of Economics, her research interests are empirical industrial organization, regulation and competition policy, health economics, pharmaceutical economics and digital platforms and markets.

Marie-Louise Leroux

A CIRANO Researcher and Fellow since 2012, Marie-Louise Leroux is Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at the École des sciences de la gestion of the Université du Québec à Montréal. She is also a member of the editorial board of the Public Finance Review and of The Geneva Papers on Risk and Insurance - Issues and Practices.

Holding a Ph.D. in Economics from the Toulouse School of Economics, her research interests are public economics, political economics, health economics and economics of aging.

From 2007 untill 2011, she was Post-Doctoral Student in Economics at the Center for Operations Research and Econometrics (CORE), University of Louvain.

Ming Li

A CIRANO Researcher and Fellow since 2017, Ming Li is Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at Concordia University. He is also a member of the Centre interuniversitaire de recherche en économie quantitative (CIREQ).

Holding a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, his research interests are strategic information transmission, persuasion, game theoretical models of elections and political processes.

He has written research articles on a variety of subjects, including conflicts of interest in advisor-decision maker relationships, behavioural models of voter turnout, institutional conservatism as a remedy for excessive risk-taking by politicians.

Nowadays, he mainly spends time thinking about how communication and persuasion affect economic and political decision-making, and what measures can be taken to facilitate efficient communication and persuasion.

Florian Mayneris

A CIRANO Researcher and Fellow since 2017, Florian Mayneris is a full professor in the Department of Economics at the École des sciences de la gestion of the Université du Québec à Montréal.

Holding a Ph.D. in Economics from the Paris School of Economics, his fields of specialization are international trade and urban economics. His research focuses more specifically on the determinants of the economic performance of firms and regions, and on the impact evaluation of regional and industrial policies.

Dalibor Stevanovic

A CIRANO Researcher and Fellow since 2011, responsible of the CIRANO Pole on Modeling and Main Researcher of the theme Economic and Fiscal Policy, Dalibor Stevanovic is Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at the École des sciences de la gestion of the Université du Québec à Montréal and co-holder of the Chair in Macroeconomics and Forecasting at ESG-UQAM.

Holding a Ph.D. in Economics from Université de Montréal, his research interests are time series econometrics, automatic learning and massive data, with applications in macroeconomics and finance.

After a bachelor's and master's degree in economics from Université Laval in Quebec City, Dalibor Stevanovic obtained his doctorate under the supervision of Jean-Marie Dufour and Jean Boivin. He then did a postdoctoral fellowship as part of the Max Weber programme at the European University Institute in Florence.

Nicolas Vincent

Nicolas Vincent is a full professor in the Department of Applied Economics at HEC Montreal and holds a PhD in Economics from Northwestern University.

He has been a CIRANO researcher since 2021 and his expertise is in macroeconomics, monetary economics, corporate investment decisions and finance.

Huan Xie

A CIRANO Researcher and Fellow since 2008, Huan Xie is Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at Concordia University.

Holding a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Pittsburgh, she specializes in microeconomics, experimental economics, game theory and public finance.
