Natural Resources, Trade, and Financial Market Development: Theory and Evi-dence
Abstract
Previous studies, both empirical and theoretical, suggest that the effects of financial market development on natural resource overuse can cut both ways, depending on a country’s quality of governance over its resources. In this paper, we propose a new trade model which suggests that trade is a crucial missing factor is these studies. Once trade is accounted for, new results emerge that change the perspective about how financial markets interact with governance to explain resource overuse. The empirical evidence appears to confirm the theoretical insight.
