Quebec lags behind its neighbor Ontario in terms of household wealth, a phenomenon that has become more pronounced over the past 25 years. A CIRANO study (Fonseca, Poschke, and Lord, 2025) provides a portrait of the wealth of different socioeconomic groups that make up Quebec and Ontario societies based on a detailed examination of the evolution of total household wealth, as well as the various components of wealth. The authors show that real estate is the main factor explaining the differences in wealth between Quebec and Ontario.
