« Les Québécois achètent de moins en moins de produits biologiques », a Radio-Canada report that discusses the impact of inflation on organic product consumption, and cites CIRANO's Baromètre de la confiance des consommateurs québécois à l'égard des aliments.
As Ingrid Peignier, CIRANO's Senior Director of Partnerships and Research Valorization and co-author of the Barometer, explains, consumption of organic products is tending to stabilize in Quebec. In 2023, 53% of respondents said they wanted to maintain their level of consumption, while the proportions of those wishing to increase or decrease their consumption were balanced. These data suggest that the market is reaching a threshold of stability, perhaps a ceiling, with a downward trend. Preliminary data from the CIRANO 2025 Barometer confirm this stable trend.
In a context of persistent food inflation, budgetary trade-offs weigh heavily: for 75% of Quebecers, price remained one of the most important criteria when buying food in 2023.
But cost is not the only obstacle. A lack of knowledge of organic certifications - their requirements and control mechanisms - remains a major obstacle to greater commitment, as the 2023 Barometer revealed.
The full results of the CIRANO 2025 Barometer, expected by this summer, will enable us to delve deeper into these findings and gain a better understanding of the evolution of Quebecers' perceptions and behaviours towards organic food, as well as towards a number of other issues.
