The Université de Montréal recently published an article on the commissioning of the Édouard-Montpetit station of the Réseau express métropolitain (REM), one of the most remarkable components of the network due to its exceptional depth — more than 70 metres below the mountain. Beyond the engineering achievement, this connection is viewed by experts as a major opportunity to rethink accessibility and urban organization in a key area of Montréal.
In this context, Jean-Philippe Meloche, professor at the School of Urban Planning and Landscape Architecture at the Université de Montréal, CIRANO Researcher and Fellow, and Principal Researcher of the Territoires theme, was invited to analyze the issues related to this new infrastructure. An expert in urban economics, he examines the station’s potential impacts on sustainable mobility, metropolitan flows, and possibilities for local redevelopment.
His contribution helps shed light on ongoing discussions surrounding planning practices and the ways in which this new station could serve as a lever to strengthen integration between public transit, the university environment, and the built landscape.
